About Big Five Foods

Big Five Foods™: Redefining Africa’s Future with SDG-Driven Innovation

At Big Five Foods™, we are on a mission to revolutionise food security across Africa, transforming the continent’s agricultural landscape through groundbreaking innovation, sustainable practices, and a relentless commitment to community empowerment.

Inspired by Elon Musk’s audacious approach to solving global challenges, we align our efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Goal 4 (Quality Education), aiming to eradicate nutritional insecurity, reduce post-harvest losses, and empower 10 million African households by 2030—setting a new standard for impact at scale.

Leadership That Transforms: Dr. Craig Muller

Led by Dr. Craig Muller, a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) with over 20 years of global blue-chip experience, Big Five Foods™ is at the forefront of food system innovation. Dr. Muller’s leadership mirrors Musk’s disruptive mindset, having overseen multi-billion Rand supply chains across sub-Saharan Africa, improving efficiencies and accelerating leadership development throughout African FMCG supply chains. A Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and PMP-certified leader, he has implemented FSSC 22000 and ISO 45001 standards, ensuring world-class food safety and quality. His DBA research in leadership development has empowered thousands of individuals through training programs, equipping people, organisations, and communities to thrive—driving systemic change across the continent.

Our Ethos: “BIG Impact” and “FIVE’s Grace”

Rooted in South African heritage, our name celebrates the iconic Big Five wildlife—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo—symbolising strength, resilience, and abundance, beautifully captured in our circular logo. This symbolism extends to our dual ethos:

  • BIG Impact: We deliver bold love, exceptional value, vibrant flavours, profound impact, and far-reaching presence. Our initiatives have empowered thousands of people, businesses, and communities in Africa.

  • FIVE’s Grace: Inspired by biblical symbolism, the number five reflects God’s grace, provision, and divine balance—seen in the Pentateuch, the miracle of five loaves feeding thousands, and the completeness of divine connection. We embody this grace by ensuring equitable access to nutrient-rich produce for rural and urban households.

Together, Big Five Foods™ unites abundant love with divine grace to nourish humanity, creating a legacy of sustainability and empowerment across Africa.

Addressing SDG Goal 2: Zero Hunger

The Challenge in Africa and South Africa: SDG Goal 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security, and improve nutrition by 2030. However, Africa faces significant hurdles. In 2022, 735 million people globally faced hunger, with over 250 million in Africa, where the number of undernourished is growing faster than anywhere else. In sub-Saharan Africa, 19.1% of the population was undernourished in 2019, projected to rise to 25.7% by 2030 if trends continue. Stunting affects 31% of under-fives in the region (down from 34% in 2012), with Eastern Africa at 34% in 2019. Wasting, a marker of acute malnutrition, stands at 6.4% in Africa, above the 2030 target of 3%. In South Africa specifically, one in four people still goes hungry, and over 90 million children under five across the continent are dangerously underweight, highlighting the urgency of addressing nutritional insecurity.

Big Five Foods™ Impact: We are tackling SDG Goal 2 head-on by ensuring access to nutritious food. Our fortified porridge range, packed with essential micronutrients like iron, Vitamin A, and zinc, combats malnutrition, is >280% better (nutritional impact) than “blue chip” products . By leveraging AI-driven supply chains, we’ve reduced food costs by >39% ensuring more equitable access to food—a critical step toward zero hunger.

Addressing SDG Goal 4: Quality Education

The Challenge in Africa and South Africa: SDG Goal 4 seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030. Hunger remains a barrier to education, as malnourished children struggle to learn and attend school. In Africa, 148 million children under five suffered from stunted growth in 2022, which impairs cognitive development and school performance. In Africa, 370 million schoolchildren missed free school meals during the COVID-19 pandemic, exacerbating educational disparities. The interconnectedness of hunger and education means that without addressing food insecurity, quality education remains elusive.

Big Five Foods™ Impact: We recognise that nutrition is foundational to education, and through SDG Goal 4, we’re ensuring children can learn and thrive. Our fortified porridge program provides essential nutrients to school feeding initiatives, reducing stunting and supporting cognitive development for thousands of children across South Africa and neighbouring countries. By partnering with local schools, and churches, we’re looking to increase school attendance by >25% in food-insecure communities, as children are incentivised to attend with access to nutritious meals. We’re also developing multilingual, mobile-accessible training modules, empowering thousands with knowledge on sustainable agriculture, food safety, entrepreneurship, and leadership. This educational outreach fosters long-term food security, breaking the cycle of hunger and illiteracy.

Big Five Foods™ is more than a business—it’s a movement to address Africa’s food security and education crises.
